"Nick of Time (movie)"

Did the killer see this movie? I know we have discussed the movie "Ransom", and its possible role in the JonBenet murder, but I don't remember if we have discussed the movie "Nick of Time". Doing an internet search on JonBenet, I found the following statements:

"Then let's focus our attention on the ransom note. From the very first line problems emerge. Addressed to Mr. Ramsey, it reads: "Listen carefully! We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction." Of course, a real "foreign faction" would never refer to themselves as such. The whole line eerily echoes the movie Nick of Time which aired at 7:30 on Christmas night on a local Boulder cable station. The movie concerns the kidnapping of a six year old girl by an unnamed political faction and in the film the victim is told to "Listen to me very carefully!" Bill Cox, a guest that night of the Ramseys' friends the Whites, remembered watching it."

As a film critic, Janet McReynolds probably saw all kinds of movies like that, upon their release. The time of the movie, as I understood it, was later in the evening. Please recheck the time.

I rented it years ago, to see what it was about. The gist of the movie is different than what happened to JonBenet. The kidnappers were using the girl as a hostage to get the father to kill a presidential candidate. In the end the girl survived, and the scheme was thwarted by the father.

But the girl was like JonBenet, same age. I recall a teddy bear in the movie. She had light brown hair. She was just a typical six year old.

I've got a question. Since many of us have been able to locate all kinds of things to add to the forum investigation, why is it we've been unable to locate any of Janet McReynold's film reviews?

She must have used a different name? Other than Louise Armstrong?

I remember once someone said she wrote under yet another name but I have forgotten what that name was. I investigated it at the time but could not conclude if it was really her. It seemed like her, but then film critics all write similarly to some extent. It was for a paper in the Northeast...not Boulder. I will try to remember the name. It is buried deep in my memory.

She wrote her first novel as Jan Stephen but I wasn't aware of her writing under yet another name on the east coast. It would be great if you could remember the name.

Here's what bothers me, though. Even if she wrote under a different name for the Daily Camera, THEY know the name she used. So would the readership of that paper. Why hasn't anyone come forward with that information? There are posters who live in the area and some who used to live in the area.

I searched and found this one article by her from 1978. It isn't a film critique...more like a review of a photography exhibit at the Noguchi Museum. It is listed on this website: http://www.noguchi.org/periodicals4.html

The Noguchi Museum is in New York.

McReynolds, Janet. "Imaginary Landscapes Interrelates the Arts." Sunday Cameras Magazine, Focus (1978).

I'd be VERY surprised to learn that there is only one Janet McReynolds. I'm not sure how to determine that this is the same "Janet McReynolds".

There is more than one Janet McReynolds. We have no way of knowing if this is the Janet McReynolds who involved herself in the Ramsey case. However, if we are able to locate the article, I'll let you know.

If you have submitted ONE film review to the local paper and had it successfully published (even as 'filler'), I guess you can go around to cocktail parties and say you are a film critic. Hollywood is full of producers who ain't never produced anything at all. A good source for anyone living in Boulder would be the 'throwaway' publications that listed jazz clubs, poetry readings, etc. in the suburbs around Boulder.

There are several Janet McReynolds and ofcourse the 'real' one is really Doris Janet McReynolds anyway so do be careful when constructing a Names Authority table. Janet Kay McReynolds a/k/a Janet K. McReynold is not relevant;nor is Janet Johnson McReynolds.
If anyone finds anything outabout Sunshadow films of Santa Monica, CA or Barry Bermis please let me know. It seems his firm has but one film in its entire catalog, the one Janet McReynolds worked on, and I'd sure wonder about how they support themselves when the company had only ONE film and there was but ONE sale of that film to a library.

I don't know if someone was in the home and writing the ransom note prior to the airing of that movie or not. It would seem rather whimsical to word the note from a just-aired movie.

I noticed also that when the Daily Camera, (where she alledgedly worked as a film critic,) had a story about Santa and her, they did not mention that she was a former writer for the Daily Camera. That could be because it is irrelevant, but it could also be that they also were unaware...in other words, she didn't? It's just a possibility that she did not work there. But then again, as DB says, one small published article a film critic makes.

10. "Biography"
In response to message #9

Janet has a history of selective biographical listings. If you take a look at the various 'brief bios' presented from time to time you get quite alot of what some people would term 'curious omissions'.

Does one list ALL one's children, including adopted children in a biography?
Does one list ALL their literary achievements?

I decided to bring this thread back into action. I noticed the title is "Nick of Time", the movie. With the ten-year anniversary just around the corner, I wonder if any of the programming will include the various movies that some think portions of the ransom note were taken from? That would be interesting. If anyone notices that those movies are going to air, please give everyone a heads-up on the forum. Thanks.

Although such 'heads ups' on tv shows are always appreciated, I think its better if someone goes to a decent video store and rents the movie or something like that. I had never even heard of Nick of Time prior to this thread being initiated.

Once someone has listed the various themes that might relate to the case then if it ever re=airs on tv or cable or something we might all watch it and eat pineapple simultaneously.

Pineapple is a wonderful holiday treat, Don, so it sounds like a great idea!

This is what I've collected on the proximities in time:

In Cold Blood 1967
A two part mini-series of the Clutter family murders was aired on National TV on November 24 and 26, 1996. An article in the Wichita Eagle, Wichita, Kansas newspaper, dated Nov. 25, 1996, describes the nation wide attention that the series had generated in the town of Holcomb, Kansas, and the house where the family was murdered.

Dirty Harry
This movie aired on November 29, 1996, on TBS.

In the Nick of Time 1995
The story of a political faction that kidnaps a 6 year old girl. The kidnapper begins, "Listen to me very carefully!" This show aired at 7:30p.m. on the 25th. of December

Speed 1994, ?

Seven 1995, ?

Ricochet 1991, ?

16. "urging"
In response to message #15

We know that some people have fantasies but don't act on them unless they have some other "urging", "prompting" - - and sometimes all it takes is a movie.

At that time, SickPuppy had plenty of opportunity to see those movies - - on TV or by renting them - - Hello, he probably owns a bunch of them!
