Yes, it is worth revisiting.

I have always thought the rops may have been part of the "Western" Christmas tree that was in that room - - but I have been assured by the investigators that the rope was NOT a match to that rope - - OR to the rope we see in the photographs of JBR in the cowboy hat.

So why was it there? I don't know. It seems the killer did bring it in - - and I wonder why as well.

Thoughts?

Since you have opened this thread, I thought I would repost the part of the email I received from Miss Marple on this topic:

Margoo,
I read your "evidence" thread and didn't realize there was any confusion about whether the rope was found in a bag as I always assumed it was. Wasn't it particles of the BAG, not the ROPE that were found in JBR's bed? OTOH, I'm noticing in ACR's crime scene photos that they have a ruler next to the rope. If the rope were found IN a bag of any sort, why would they measure it in that fashion? It seems like they would measure it only if it were left OUT of the bag and laying on the floor and they wished to demonstrate in the photo how much space it took up. In short, I'm confused. Maybe you've looked at this carefully enough to resolve the confusion. Else, feel free to post this at BB and see if others have any insight.

I understand what Ms. Marple is saying. I just went to look at the photo of the rope at ACR and the clump of rope is being measured. That too leads me to believe that's how the rope was found. I'm still trying to find out where in JAR's room that rope was found. I do believe the rope was brought in by the perps, however I believe its use was for nothing more than a "prop".

I DO wonder if perhaps the rope and maybe other items had been hidden away under JAR's bed the night of the party on the 23rd and then rertrieved the night of the 25th. If they were hidden under JAR's bed, maybe when they were retrieved that's how the bed skirt got moved.

The rope was in a bag in JAR's room - - and there are NO photos of the bag anywhere. The cops failed to get any.

Then why is the clump of rope being measured, as was pointed out by Ms. Marple?

I must be tired because I'm having trouble finding Miss Marple's full post and link to the photos. Could someone post it on this thread, or direct me to it?

Thanks

I'll try, Mame. I went there earlier and it is sort of buried, if you know what I mean.

Here's a link for the photo of the rope. It's on the left-hand side about one-third of the way down:

I recorded the doc this week and have watched it twice already. I'd never seen it before this week. I think I saw the first one. I'm going to forward to the rope again now.

I just took a look at the rope photos again. I think the measuring was done for scale not size. I do think it was found in a bag.

As I understand it, it was found in a bag, not the brown bag though, and the bag has never been found? Wait a minute. That doesn't make sense.

I know. I find that near impossible to believe. It's almost counter-intuitive. You're doing a search for & photographing evidence in a homicide. You find a suspicious rope in a bag, and what do you do? Take the rope out of the bag & photograph it, of course, and just ignore the bag it was in--not!

That would be a new low for the BPD. In fact, too low for me to believe, even for them. I have to believe they have the actual bag in evidence, and are keeping it under wraps. Why they didn't photograph it at the scene, however, still seems inept beyond comprehension. I kind of suspect they're lying about not having taken pictures.

Pony, I kind of suspect the police do a lot of lying. If they can lie to suspects and witnesses under questioning while trying to extract information, they would have no qualms about lying to the media, the public, or anyone else, if doing so can further their objective.

Maybe they were lying to protect evidence they wanted to withold from the public. Could be for any reason. Or, no reason at all...with the BPD, that also is a possibility.

Is there even a bag listed on the evidence lists? I know there's that canvas bag from the crawl space, but I don't remember another bag.

   >It was done for scale.

I agree it was done for scale.

Carnes:

A rope was found inside a brown paper sack in the guest bedroom of defendants' home, neither of which belonged to defendants. (SMF 181; PSMF 181.) Small pieces of the brown sack material were found in the "vacuuming" of JonBenet's bed and in the body bag that was used to transport her body. (SMF 181; PSMF 181. ) Brown cotton fibers on JonBenet's body, the paintbrush, the duct tape and on the ligature were not sourced and do not match anything in the Ramsey home. (SMF 181; PSMF 181. )

Then why do they say the brown paper bag was an evidence bag? Or was the rope in a brown paper bag when found and then placed in another brown paper evidence bag?

Edited to add: I guess that's the brown paper bag that was "identified" in the ransom note. That sure DOES make it sound like a "prop" to me. Didn't JD also say the crime scene was "posed" rather than staged?

So the perps shake the brown paper bag over JonBenet's bed before the Ramseys come home? It's beginning to sound that way.

All evidence collected at a crime scene is packaged either in paper bags, plastic bags or paper bindles with the exception of fire arms which are packaged in heavy cardboard boxes. The logical conclusion is the brown bag with rope was placed into an evidence bag to prevent contamination of any trace evidence it might contain.

Yes, we know that now too. I'm glad we don't have a missing bag that should be in evidence. Somehow that's quite a relief.

Edited to ask: In Carnes' judgment, what are these numbers? (SMF 181; PSMF 181.) Are they numbers of the evidence or the photos?
