   WAFF 48 NEWS INVESTIGATES
Karr back in Alabama? Reaction is mixed

Oct 25, 2006 07:08 PM

John Mark Karr, now cleared of porn charges and the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey, could be settling down in the Heart of the Valley.

Several residents in Karr's hometown of Hamilton in Marion County report seeing him shopping earlier this week at Wal-Mart.

Word is Karr was buying items for a home; things like cleaning supplies, small kitchen appliances, even cookware.

Now that word has gotten around, folks are deciding how they feel about that.

Nellia Peterson says she got the phone call from her friends Monday night.

"They just said they happened to see him. The person who saw him didn't know him. They just remembered him from the news and happened to see him go by," says Peterson.

Karr, the Hamilton native who admitted to murdering Jon Benet Ramsey, spotted back in his hometown in northwest Alabama. Feelings are mixed.

"Is he going to live here?", asked one resident, "I'm not really that concerned."

Toni Glenn has heard the same reports, and even one first-hand account from the store clerk who rang up Karr's order Monday at Wal-Mart in Hamilton.

Glenn says she and others thought he'd likely move in with his father in Atlanta.

"I just don't know how this is going to go over. I guess we'll have to see," says Glenn.

Glenn says just about everyone in Hamilton even knows what kind of vehicle Karr is driving.

"Not sure if it's an older or newer model, but it's a red Jeep Cherokee," says Glenn.

Everyone left wondering if Karr will move back into a home on Sentry Road just west of town, one he grew up in, living with his grandparents.

WAFF 48 News waited outside that home on Sentry Road for more than an hour Wednesday, but no sign of John Mark Karr.

What we do know is the electricity is on and neighbors say work crews have been seen doing minor work recently.

Well, now we know where he is - - but will he really be allowed to remain there? Will his neighbors, parents of innocent children, really be able to just ignore his presence?

I cautiously admit this: I don't think he is going to be welcome or truly SAFE anywhere. There are sick and angry people everywhere - - and with the stories he told - - let me repeat that HE TOLD - - I just don't see how he can sleep at night.

He might want to consider how easy it is for intruders to ....

That isn't JUST in his imagination.

TV station reports John Mark Karr has gone to Alabama

Associated Press

ATLANTA - An Atlanta television station reported Friday night that John Mark Karr, the man who briefly was a suspect in the JonBenet Ramsey murder, has been taken out of state by his father because of threatening telephone calls.

WSB-TV said Wex Karr, who lives in Atlanta, told the station he drove his son to Alabama last weekend.

An unidentified neighbor told the station that young Karr was in fear of his life and that his father was getting a lot of the same heat.

A telephone call to Wex Karr's home got no answer.

A neighborhood association began alerting its members that John Mark Karr was living in the community.

Jim King, president of the Chastain Park Civic Association, sent out an e-mail to the group's 2,000 homeowner-members announcing that John Mark Karr had moved into his father's home in the upscale north Atlanta neighborhood where houses are on the market for more than $600,000.

The e-mail pointed out that Wex Karr's home is about three blocks north of a playground and stated, "as you may recall there have been many published reports in newspapers on Mr. Karr relating to incidents in Colorado, California, and Thailand," followed by an Internet link to media reports about Karr.

King said he was unaware that Karr may have been taken out of the state.

"I have no relationship with the family so I have no way to know what is going on there," King said.

I think he's holed up there to write his Daxis book. He can change enough of the text to call it fiction. He'll again, confess to the murder of JBR and give more details...but, not enough to get him arrested. OR, he will tell all and before it's published (but after he gets the advance) take off to parts unknown to hide out in Europe or South America...

You might be right. But this time, I wonder if he'll really confess or just say, "I was there" (when she died). If he actually confesses, it might mean more problems for him.

Wonder if his attorneys can keep his hands off that keyboard (for more purposes than for writing a book).

Karr left for parts unknown, dad says

By ADRIANNE MURCHISON
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 10/28/06

John Mark Karr has apparently left his father's Sandy Springs home, driven away by pressure from neighbors, his father said Friday.

His departure came about a week after an e-mail announcing the arrival of Karr — the man brought back from Thailand as a suspect in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey — circulated through several neighborhoods in north Atlanta and Sandy Springs.

"I don't know nothing. I'm not hiding anything. ... He's not here," said his 85-year-old father, Wexford Karr.

During the monthly Chastain Park Civic Association meeting last Monday, 35 residents spoke out and said they were concerned that Karr had moved into their neighborhood, said Jim King, the association's president.

"To say that they were concerned would be an understatement," King said.

Since that meeting, Wexford Karr has received harassing telephone calls, he said.

During a reporter's visit in Karr's home Friday, he received two calls from callers who appeared to remain silent on the other end of the line.

"Hello? Hello? Nobody here but me," Karr said into the receiver.

He reported the harassing phone calls to the Sandy Springs Police Department, but an official report was not filed, said Lt. Steve Rose, a police spokesman.

The department may add an extra patrol to Wexford Karr's neighborhood, Rose said.

During the past week, Karr and his son visited Hamilton, Ala., where they have relatives, to see whether John Mark Karr would be more welcome there. But after John Mark Karr stopped at a local Wal-Mart, word got out around town about his arrival, the father said. The two returned to Atlanta.

"Then his attorney called and the next thing I knew, John Mark Karr was on the road into oblivion," the father said.

Sandy Springs residents at a local Caribou Coffee were relieved upon learning that Karr had left the area.

"We keep a close tab on our kids," said Hubert Pereira, "but it's awesome that he's gone."

Added Rob Robinson, another resident. "His presence in the area was kind of disturbing."

In August, Karr, 41, was cleared by DNA tests as a suspect in JonBenet's 1996 slaying in Boulder, Colo.

Earlier this month, he was released from a California jail after a judge dismissed child pornography charges, saying prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to take the case to trial.

"I knew he didn't do it," said Wexford Karr, who'd been estranged from his son for nearly six years. "John Mark Karr couldn't kill a flea. ... I'd love my son no matter what ... whether he was a murderer or not."

Some residents of Hamilton, Ala. were a bit uneasy Friday when they found out that one of the city’s most infamous residents was back in town. John Mark Karr, the man once suspected of murdering six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, has returned to Hamilton.

News travels fast in small towns like Hamilton, and when Karr was spotted at a local store, word spread.

“I have a friend who knew him in high school,” said Carol Barrow, who lives in Hamilton.

“She IMd me and said, ‘guess who’s back in town.’ I didn’t know, and she said, ‘John Karr.’ I was like, ‘oh my gosh!’”

Police Chief Billy Own said Karr was seen at a Wal-Mart in Hamilton as early as Monday. He understands that people are concerned, but said there was nothing the police department could do because Karr hadn’t been convicted of anything.

No one answered the door when CNN’s reporter knocked on the Karr family home, though lights were on in the house.

One woman who lives nearby said she was angry when she found out Karr was back in Hamilton.

“We have looked at this house,” she said on condition of anonymity. “I’ve pulled up to this house, and it has a dark shadow over it.”

Others said they’ll just keep to themselves so long as Karr does the same.

Eve, I wonder if either you or Jams can furnish a brief synopsis on this Nancy story? The only "Nancy" I can relate to anything is Nancy Krebs.

No, this is a different "Nancy". Nancy is the name Jameson gave her for forum use; it's not her real name. When you have time, do a search for posts by "I know" (these were written by "Nancy"). Apparently Jameson had corresponded with her long before she posted here (this year) as "I know". A poster named "Mint Julep" eventually did get in touch with Nancy and she has some posts also. I don't really know too many of the details, except that she has said she "wrote - not composed" the ransom note for someone who was going to write a book. She also lives in Alabama.
