"However, Susan Stine learned that NBC would feature criminologist John Douglas on a Dateline program scheduled to air on January 28. This piqued our interest, since we had met Douglas only weeks before in Mike Bynum's office.

Jane Pauley spoke from Studio 3-B in Rockefeller Center, announcing that John Douglas, the man who pioneered the technique of criminal profiling with the FBI, would share his impressions of what was happening in the investigation of JonBenet's murder. Douglas's credentials were impressive, to say the least. To develop his insights into how the criminal mind works, he had worked on over five thousand homicide cases, including some of the most heinous murders the planet has ever known. Douglas has a doctorate in psychology to back up his real-life experiences. He had accurately profiled the Unabomber years before he was caught, and had accurately predicted who Atlanta's serial child murderer would be before Wayne Williams was eventually caught and convicted. John Douglas had been the inspiration for the creation of agent Jack Crawford in the book and the film The Silence of the Lambs.

NBC's Chris Hanson conducted the interview for Dateline. He presented Douglas as the man bringing the listening world an "insider's view" of JonBenet's murder.

Douglas started by explaining that his involvement in the case began with suspicions about our guilt, strictly based on the overwhelming tide against us in the media. Only after interviewing Patsy and me for more than four hours did he conclude that we could not possibly have been involved. Douglas said on the air."
