Want a place to post information on cases where a child is killed by a parent.  Want to show that it doesn't happen with no motive or history of mental illness, substance abuse or SOMETHING.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A North Carolina man fatally stabbed his 6-year-old daughter along the Blue Ridge Parkway in front of park rangers, federal prosecutors allege in a criminal complaint.
U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose said in a statement that a complaint was filed Tuesday charging 36-year-old Seth Willis Pickering of Asheville with murder in the death of his daughter, Lila Pickering.
A medical examiner says the girl died from a stab wound to her chest Friday.
Court documents show Pickering and his estranged wife had been in a custody battle over the girl. According to the complaint, obtained by CBS affiliate WSPA, Willis Pickering didn’t have custody of the child when he took her Friday from the home of the custodian where she had been placed temporarily by the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services.
As investigators were looking into the parental abduction, park rangers who weren’t aware of a lookout alert that had been issued for the girl saw the two walking down a steep embankment near the Blue Ridge Parkway, the complaint says. Suspicious because there were no trails, picnic areas or camp sites nearby, the rangers approached the man after they saw him building an illegal fire, according to the complaint.
The rangers heard Pickering tell his daughter, “Don’t worry honey, we will when the cops leave,” and “Police!” when they came within 20 to 25 feet of the father and daughter.
The man said, “It’s going fine, nothing going on,” before allegedly lunging at the girl without warning.
The rangers said they hear a thud-like noise and a high-pitched sound from the girl, and then saw the child fall to the ground, the complaint says. Pickering then raised his hands in the air and a ranger shouted to him, “Did you just stab her?”
The rangers said they couldn’t recall if Pickering answered. They say the child had a knife protruding from her chest and they tried to help the girl, but she died.
When the rangers asked Pickering why he would kill his daughter, he told them, “Now they will never be able to take her away from me. She’s happier now… it’s what she wanted,” the complaint says.
Lila Pickering was a first grade student at Johnston Elementary School in Buncombe County. Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin said in a statement released to the station: “While many questions have yet to be answered, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the heartbreaking loss of this wonderful little girl.”
Willis Pickering is to appear in U.S. District Court once he is transferred from state custody. State authorities also have charged him with first-degree murder.
He is being held in the Buncombe County jail. It was not clear if he has an attorney.

Asheville mom accused of killing daughters with hatchet

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
An Asheville woman is charged with murdering her two daughters with a hatchet, and then turning the same hatchet on herself.
Naiyana Patel is recovering at Mission Hospital and Asheville Police have posted an officer outside her door.  A spokesman for the department said she is not expected to be released today.
Police were called to the Patel family's home on Shannon Drive in East Asheville on Saturday morning.
Inside, they found two girls, ages 4 and 8, dead.
The biggest question neighbors and friends have is why this young mother is accused of taking the lives of her children.
For the last couple years, the Patel family ran the Ash Pantry Food Store, a neighborhood convenience store near Biltmore Village.
"I've always stopped there [at the store], pretty much every day, and I talk to them, and to hear the kids in there, laughing and playing… to go by there this morning not to hear it, it's…it's sad," said neighbor James Ratcliff. "You never would expect it from them. I mean, she, the mama, was real caring and loving for them kids."
Neighbors say Lalji Patel and his wife Naiyana, recently moved to their new home with their two daughters, 8-year-old Jiya, and four year old Piya. They say the young family was always friendly - they seemed happy.
Saturday morning, a neighbor heard commotion at their house.
"We saw the father get out and get on his [moped] and leave, and as he went by he waved, very friendly, and then he left, and about, ten minutes after that, we heard these blood curdling screams. It was awful. It was terrible. And, I just knew there was something wrong. As a mother, I knew there was something wrong, those screams were not just, you know, crying."
Asheville police say Naiyana Patel has had recent mental health issues.  They say she had been recently seeing a psychiatrist.
She has been charged with first degree murder, but will not be under arrest until she is released from the hospital and formally interviewed.  Asheville Police are seeking a Gujarati Hindu interpreter to help them with their interview.
They say a funeral for the girls may be scheduled for later this week.
