Drifter Could Be Suspect in Child's Killing
Author: BRIAN MAFFLY THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE; Salt Lake Tribune

A man charged last week in a bizarre North Carolina child kidnapping and rape case could be a suspect in the unsolved killing of Rosie Tapia, a 6-year-old Salt Lake City girl snatched from her bed in August 1995.

John Brewer Eustace, 31, kicked in a screen and climbed through the window of a Charlotte, N.C., home early last week to abduct a 2-year-old girl, police say.

The child was discovered in a back yard on March 26 near Eustace's room in a boarding house. The suspect turned himself in the next morning by flagging down a police cruiser, said Charlotte police Officer Tom Barry.

Eustace's alleged method of operation in the Charlotte abduction is identical to that used in the abductions of Rosie Tapia, 6, and Monica DaSilva, 7, who disappeared from her Reno, Nev., home in 1990 while her parents slept.
DaSilva's bones were found a month later in a canyon and Tapia's body was found in a canal near her Utah home.

The FBI noticed the similarities and encouraged Charlotte police to notify their counterparts in Reno and Salt Lake City.

Eustace, an alcoholic drifter originally from California, once lived in Las Vegas, but police had no direct knowledge he was in Utah at the time of the Tapia murder.

Salt Lake City police explored hundreds of leads after Rosie Tapia was snatched from her apartment at 1601 W. Snow Queen Place (1675 South). Her killer climbed through her bedroom window on Aug. 13, 1995, and carried her off while the girl's siblings slept nearby. She was sexually assaulted before she was thrown into the canal, police said.

When clues produced no suspects, police built a psychological profile to help find the killer.

Salt Lake City officials have not decided whether to send an investigator, Det. Jim Prior, to North Carolina.

``It's too early to say he's a suspect,'' said Lt. Phil Kirk. ``There are some strong similarities.''

Though no physical evidence has surfaced linking Eustace to the Utah and Nevada killings, the unusual tactic of stealing children from bedrooms could make Eustace one of the most promising suspects in the frustrating 17-month-old Tapia investigation.

Tapia's mother, Lewine Tapia, told the Charlotte Observer she always hoped police would find her daughter's killer, but she had never heard Eustace's name before.

``It's been so hard, not knowing the person who took her,'' she told the newspaper. ``If I could help them in any way to find who did this to Rosie, I will. It hurts me so bad to hear about other kids getting hurt. All these memories keep coming back. But I still want to keep trying.''

Eustace is in custody on charges of kidnapping, rape and burglary in the North Carolina case.

"Police have conducted more than 200 interviews," Aaholm said, "and every one of them has been transcribed and re-read. In the process, they have found things that are significant that they need to follow up on." Gosage and Thomas went to Atlanta from Charlotte, N.C., where they were looking into a man as a possible suspect in the murder case.

However, they ruled out John Brewer Eustace as a suspect after interviewing him. Eustace is being held without bond in North Carolina in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 2-year-old Charlotte girl who lived in an apartment near his home. He's also suspected in connection with similar kidnappings that resulted in the deaths of three young girls in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Reno.
Aaholm said there were similarities in the cases to warrant Boulder detectives checking out Eustace.
"The Charlotte police called us, and said there was some similarity in his (Eustace's) MO (modus operandi)," Aaholm said. "Boulder police decided there was enough similarity that it warranted sending two officers" to investigate.
"He has been conclusively ruled out as a suspect," she added.
