In 2012, Boulder Police Sgt. Jim Byfield received a purple heart after being  injured in an assault on University Hill that took place in 2010.

On Oct. 16, 2010, a male slashed tires on two police vehicles with a knife near 11th Street and College Avenue. Byfield chased the suspect, and, during a struggle, suffered a concussion and a broken clavicle and elbow.

Byfield was in rehabilitation for months before returning to duty and retired in 2013 after 32 years with the department.
